As everyone will know, I’m a very opinionated person. Recently, I’ve read some utter tosh online regarding stadiums, players, and pundits. I need to rant. I’m going to do so now. Here are some opinions in football which are unpopular, but shouldn’t be:
The atmosphere at Anfield is massively overrated.
Big games that Liverpool are winning? Great. ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ at the start and end of the game? Great. Other than that, it’s an absolute library and ANYONE who has been an away fan there will tell you the exact same thing. Palace played there yesterday and consistently outsung them all game. When the play slows down, the teams are level or not a lot is happening, Anfield is silent. They can make a lot of noise when they want, but so can every other set of fans in the league. An absolute myth of an atmosphere.
Kieran Trippier is living off the World Cup and is not even one of the top 3 English right-backs in the league
In Russia, Trippier was probably England’s best player. Unreal set pieces, great going forward from wing-back, ice cool in the shoot-out vs Colombia and let’s not forget ‘that’ free-kick vs Croatia. Unfortunately (and Spurs fans will tell you this) he has been very poor this season and shouldn’t be in that Spurs team. He doesn’t come close to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker and statistically has been one of the worst right-backs in the league this season.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka >>>>> Trent Alexander-Arnold
Of course, I’m biased, but this is just true. Defensively Wan-Bissaka is better in every single aspect and going forward they match up fairly evenly. Trent has a much better passing range and has a better delivery but that’s it. Other than that, it’s no competition. The clubs they play for is simply an invalid argument because they’ve both come through their local youth systems to play first-team football: neither have them have ever been transferred, they’ve both simply hit the highest heights they can so far in their careers. Look at how they both handled Leroy Sane: against Liverpool, Sane ran the show, had Trent on toast and scored the winner. Against Palace, he was absolutely non-existent to the point where he was shying away from getting the ball. The difference? The full-back he was against. Disagree with me all you want but when AWB inevitably leaves Palace for a massive club then you will see.
Man City didn’t ‘buy the league last season’.
Of course, they have loads of money but so do all the top teams. They spent their money outstandingly well and Pep had them playing the best football this league has ever seen. If you can’t see the improvements that KDB, Sterling, Sane and Stones have made under his management then football isn’t the sport for you. The money helped but it was 80% down to Pep.
Using team positions in the table is not a valid argument when comparing two players.
Similar to the Trent vs AWB debate, just because one player plays for a worse team doesn’t mean he’s automatically worse than a player who plays for a big team. Some examples, currently: AWB > Trent, Wilfried Ndidi > Nemanja Matic, Jamie Vardy > Alvaro Morata, Ricardo Pereira > Ashley Young, Mamadou Sakho > Shkodran Mustafi, Kasper Schmeichel > Bernd Leno, Wilf Zaha > Alex Iwobi, Willian, Pedro, Lamela, Richarlison. The list goes on. You get my point. Just because Harry Kane has never won the league doesn’t make him inferior to someone like Ruud van Nistelrooy. In fact, Kane is one of the best strikers this league has ever seen.
Alex Scott is a quality pundit
Alex Scott is the first female to really break through and become a regular on TV and some people seem to have a massive problem with that. Put simply: the only reason people don’t like this is because she’s a woman. She is SO much better than the likes of Graeme Souness, Garth Crooks, Paul Ince, Kevin Kilbane and Robbie Keane, all of whom appear pretty much every week. She has great insight and has fully warranted her place on all the panels she is currently on.
